21st March 2012

Here’s a preview of the totes I will have available at Odd Duck on Saturday March 31st, they’re made from digitally printed fabric. It’s the first time I’ve ever made a tote bag, so I’m pretty happy with the results. I’ll have 6 available at the fair and will have more available online sometime in April.

I made this bunting flag sign for City Song Vintage’s booth at Retro Indie Market next month, I thought It would make for a fun and easy project to do so here’s a quick DIY post!

  • Some of the things you’ll need are a pen, a pencil (I’m using a charcoal pencil), twine or thin rope, a safety pin, scissors, printed out letters, and a nice sturdy fabric.
  • Optional supplies are a sewing machine or needle and thread and a sharpie marker or acrylic paint.

Now for the steps:

  1. Cut out the shape you want for your flags on a piece of paper and trace it onto the fabric, and then cut it out.
  2. I measured my flag and printed out my letters in photoshop in the appropriate size, the font I used was Pointedly Mad
  3. Take your pencil and trace the back of the print out, make sure to cover all the edges of the letter.
  4. Place the letter where you’d like it on the flag front side up, trace the outlines with a pen with firm pressure on a flat hard surface. The pencil you traced on the back will transfer on to the flag.
  5. OPTIONS: Now you can either chose to fill in the letter with your choice of paint or you can take the easy way out like me, and use a sharpie. I love the sketchy look it gives the letters and keeps the flags really light weight.
  6. Cut a thin strip of fabric about half an inch thick and the same length of the flag.
  7. OPTIONS: Now you can sew it with your sewing machine or hand sew it if you don’t have a machine. I used my machine.
  8. Place the strip at the top on the back of the flag, and sew a line down the top of the strip and then a separate line down the bottom of the strip, this will create a tube on the back of the flag.
  9. Tie your twine to the safety pin
  10. Pass the twine through tube you just created until you reach the end, and you’re done!

It’s really simple, pretty much anyone could do this. I leave the edges of the flags raw, but you could easily finish the edges with a fray check or a Serger.

Stitch Rock is basically around the corner and I’m in the home stretch finishing off some brand new items for the show. You may have seen that I’ve been working on some patterns in illustrator and stuff, well they got printed on to fabric via the wonderful spoonflower, the quality of the digital fabric printing is amazing.

The colors are super vivid and the images are crisp, very accurate to the actual illustrations. I turned them into zipper pouches, perfect for keeping your smaller items and just throwing them into a purse, bag, or backpack.

If you aren’t following me on instagram, you should be! I usually post preview photos and progress shots there before anywhere else. My name on there is Danny Brito, surprise surprise.
